Qatar vs Switzerland Live Streaming Guide | Match Preview | Analysis | Prediction | Team News & Where to Watch

FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group B | Saturday, June 13, 2026 | 3:00 PM ET | Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area

1. Match Overview

This will be a significant match for Qatar — their first at a World Cup outside of their own country, and the first time they have qualified for the tournament through their own on-pitch performances. They arrive carrying the scars of 2022, when they became the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage without winning a game. Switzerland, on the other hand, are seasoned World Cup regulars. They are at the World Cup for the sixth tournament running and 13th time overall, having reached the last 16 in each of their previous three appearances. Everything points toward a Swiss win — but Qatar have a player in Akram Afif who can change a match on his own.

2. Group B Snapshot

Canada | Bosnia and Herzegovina | Qatar | Switzerland

Switzerland are the clear group favourites. Market consensus prices Switzerland at 81% likely to win this match, with the draw at 14% and Qatar a long shot at 7%. For Qatar, getting something from this opener is critical. Lose here and their World Cup is over before it has really started.

3. Match Preview

There is no running away from 2022 for Qatar. There were a lot of hopes from them, and they just did not show up in the biggest tournament of their lives. The good news is that they now have another chance — and this time without the crushing weight of being tournament hosts. Julen Lopetegui, the experienced former Spain and Real Madrid manager, has been brought in to build structure and give Qatar a genuine defensive platform. His system relies on Akram Afif to provide creativity from the left half-space and Almoez Ali to lead the line. But their preparations have been far from convincing — six matches without a win, including a 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland and a 1-1 draw with El Salvador in their final pre-tournament friendly on June 6.

Switzerland under Murat Yakin are calm, structured, and efficient. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler hold the double pivot, with Xhaka acting as the quarterback of everything the Swiss do — dictating tempo, circulating the ball, and organising the press. Manuel Akanji marshals a back line that kept clean sheets in five of their six qualifying matches. Switzerland know exactly what they are and how to win ugly. That is often the most dangerous kind of team at a World Cup.

4. Team News

Qatar: Akram Afif and Almoez Ali are both fit and expected to start as Qatar's primary attacking threats. The concern for Lopetegui is less about availability and more about fitness and form — the squad relies heavily on experienced domestic players, with several aged 33 and over, and questions remain about how well they will cope with the intensity of a World Cup.

Switzerland: Switzerland have no confirmed injury absentees of note ahead of the match. The fitness of Ruben Vargas is the one genuine uncertainty — he is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury, with a potential return date of June 13, the day of the match itself. If Vargas misses out, Fabian Rieder or Michel Aebischer are expected to step in.

5. Predicted Lineups

Qatar (4-3-3):
Barsham; Gaber, Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel, Homam Ahmed; Boudiaf, Hatem, Madibo; Al-Haydos, Almoez Ali, Afif

Switzerland (4-2-3-1):
Kobel; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, R. Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Ndoye, Aebischer, Vargas; Embolo

6. Head to Head

These two sides have faced off just once before — in a friendly in 2018. Qatar won that game 1-0 thanks to a late Akram Afif strike. That result means nothing here, but it is a reminder that Afif has a habit of stepping up on big occasions. This is the first competitive meeting between the two nations.

7. Tactical Analysis

The key duel is Akram Afif against Silvan Widmer on Switzerland's right side. Afif, with 125 caps and 39 goals for Qatar, is the side's primary ball-carrier and the axis around which Lopetegui's attacks are built. He drifts into the left half-space and looks to find pockets between the lines. If Switzerland can limit Afif's influence through Widmer's pressing triggers and Xhaka's cover from midfield, Qatar's creative options diminish sharply.

For Qatar to get anything from this game, they need to stay compact, stay organised, and keep it tight for as long as possible. A 0-0 at half-time would suit them perfectly. Switzerland's danger is becoming too patient and allowing Qatar to grow into the match. Yakin's side are not the most expansive or exciting team in the tournament, but they are disciplined and clinical when chances arrive.

8. Form Guide

Qatar (last 5): D L L L L — Six games without a win heading into the tournament. Deeply unconvincing preparation.
Switzerland (last 5): W W D W W — Strong and consistent, conceding very little throughout qualifying and warm-up matches.

9. Prediction

Switzerland should win this comfortably on paper, and their form and squad quality back that up. Switzerland are not going to embarrass Qatar, but the quality gap is real and it is hard to construct a scenario where Qatar earn more than a point. Expect a professional Swiss performance — organised, patient, and ultimately decisive through the quality of Embolo or Ndoye in the second half.

Final Score Prediction: Switzerland 2 — 0 Qatar
